Mushrooms and Maintenance in Minnesota. by moe.

Dear god it's September.

On the way out of Denver we started hearing reports, most through Indymedia, that The St. Paul police were raiding the homes of known activists, including Food Not Bombs cookhouses, and searching and seizing.

This prompted some very real and intense discussion. What should we be prepared for? What did all of this mean?

We stopped at Clear Lake in Iowa to gather more information and discuss our options. After a few hours of what was mostly an emotional cooldown, we had the phone number of a local legal aid office and a clearer perspective of what was going on. Also, we had "Chicken of the Woods" mushrooms, thanks to Nick's mad mushroom-gathering skills. They actually taste like chicken.

Today we had our first Twin Cities event. It went off without a hitch-- we were part of the after-party for the Liberty March, which included fancy bike vehicles, polar bear puppets, and a copy of the Constitution the size of a city block. The only two cops we saw passed us on bikes, nonplussed. But a very realy political threat was confirmed when we heard reports that a Permaculture Demonstration Bus had been seized nearby, its inhabitants left on the side of the road.

Adding to the mix: Hurricane Gustav.
