August 28, 2008 don't mistake sustainability for something other than work. by moe. Story goes: Arrive in Denver, set up camp. Wake up early, set up carnival at the Green Frontier Fest. And by "set up" I mean: ez ups, tables, cutains and endless of endless doohickies. Bark bark bark. Say Hi to Daryl Hannah. Play with lots of five year olds. Connect with excited green folks. Talk to a couple of news stations, including the Daily Show via Rob Riggle(ooh la laah). Return in the evening to an amazing spot, a lot on the other side of the river with a view of downtown. Thank everything that is Susan Powers. Eat your damn food (it's hot and sustainable). That night: massive meeting. Massive meeting of massive meetings, with the big notepad and everything. Because: we have a big event setup the next day, a dome, a moroccan tent, and the conscious carnival besides. Plus there's the prep for the arrival of Luciano (insert mysterious and powerful music). Woop woop. Details plus. Next day: endless heat and moving stuff around, with half the crew attached to laptops and working out accomodations, equipment rentals, and truck repairs. A moment of silence when yours truly (ahem) cuts Priscilla into a guywire and rips a power line loose: the sky explodes. Ka-boom. Apologize to all the local businesses for cutting their power. Shake hands and sigh. Tent goes up, dome goes up, inch by metallic inch, into the wee hours of the night. Crew collapse exhausted. And then: SLR presents our DNC Be the Change event, together with HUNI, the local neighborhood association near Hirshorn Park. It begins with blazing heat and a gauntlet of beautiful food. It continues with the brilliant sounds of Jennifer Johns and Queen Delah. It ends with the most massive gathering of blinky blissful bikers you ever seen. They swarmed our beer garden and left us grinning. Never mistake the work for anything other than rewarding. Soon to be: Obama's speech and the End of Denver. More Blog Entries: |
